John Willie's Bizaar

For Alex, Petra, Michela...(and all who are interested), here is a link to the pioneering work of John Willie, publisher of Bizaar and the "Rembrandt of Pulp".

Though his work is very different, fashion designer/artist Walter Van Beirendonck and Performance Artist Rebecca Horn might be of interest to you.

Virginia Woolf and Orlando

Some of you were very interested in the work of writer/ feminist Virginia Woolf as a result of watching Sally Potter's adaptation of Orlando. If you want to know more, read on. She was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, and wrote several books including A Room of One's Own and To the Lighthouse.

Rene Descartes, Cartesian Divide and the Body

"I think therefore I am" / Cogito Ergo Sum

Following up on our conversation in class, here are some links to information about the philosopher Rene Descartes, whose writings had an enormous impact on Modern Western Philosophy, and the ideas of the Cartesian Divide/Dualism/Mind-Body Problem. Perhaps a bit hard to grasp, but essential to know about, since some would argue that our culture (the way we think about things, what we value, etc.) has been deeply structured by his ideas, and by those philosophers that follow in his path. His work is particularly relevant to our conversations in class about the body.

a quick sketch of some shaping I am interested in; for petra and michela.
am interested in how the fabric can be pulled over top under structures, and how that gives the illusion of changing the body's shape (just another thought to add to our idea pool).
